Some agreements may provide special “opt-out” boxes that the user can click to stop the spyware from being included in the download.
Be sure to review the document before signing off on the download. Another way that spyware can access your computer is by tricking you into manipulating the security features designed to prevent any unwanted installations. The Internet Explorer Web browser was designed not to allow websites to start any unwanted downloads. That is why the user has to initiate a download by clicking on a link. For example: a pop-up modeled after a standard Windows dialog box, may appear on your screen. The message may ask you if you would like to optimize your Internet access. It provides yes or no answer buttons, but, no matter which button you push, a download containing the spyware program will commence. Number 2: Get a spam blocking software. There are many programs out there for this. (Go to www.cloudmark.com or www.mailwasher.net for example). You may also buy a professional version. Whatever you do, get the software. It will save you time. The software is not foolproof, but they really do help. You usually have to do some manual set up to block certain types of eMail.

Firstly, you will have to handle people who newly sign up on your list manually. People who wish to unsubscribe needs to be manually removed as well – causing you massive administration problems.
The worst thing is most Internet service providers refuse to let you send bulk emails to many people at once. I use the Veretekk eMail system of verification to send out eMails. So that no spam will prey on the unsuspecting through my network.

Interestingly, WebPoison.org is an open source project geared to fight Internet "spambots" and "spam spiders", by giving them bogus HTML web pages, which contain bogus email addresses.

In addition, it prohibits the use of misleading subject lines and requires that emails include and opt-out mechanism. The legislation also prohibits senders from harvesting addresses off Web sites. Violations constitute a misdemeanor crime subject to up to one year in jail.

10. Consider making a boot disk on a floppy disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised by a malicious program. Obviously, you need to take this step before you experience a hostile breach of your system.
In 2003, President Bush signed the “Can Spam” bill, in December of 2003 which is the first national standards around bulk unsolicited commercial e-mail. The bill, approved by the Senate by a vote of 97 to 0, prohibits senders of unsolicited commercial e-mail from using false return addresses to disguise their identity (spoofing) and the use of dictionaries to generate such mailers.
Spam, as you can see is illegal. Keeping up to date with Computer Training will help keep you informed of any new laws being passed by congress.

Some file extensions will, by default, continue to remain hidden, but you are more likely to see any unusual file extensions that do not belong.

Below are a few easy, cost-effective steps you can take to make your computer more secure to begin with:
1. Always make backups of important information and store in a safe place separate from your computer. Personally, I recommend Carbonite.com. It is only $50 a year and everything is totally automatic.
2. Update and patch your operating system, web browser and software frequently. If you have a Windows operating system, start by going to http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx and enter “update wizard” in the search box. This program will help you find the latest patches for your Windows computer.

Another form of backup that is becoming very popular is the use of what are called key, or pen drives. Key drives are tiny drives but can still hold up to a gigabyte or more of data.

I promised some tips I would give the Next time in computer training, some simple and quick tips for you to make your backup a breeze. Here they are:
1) have the disaster recovery option enabled when performing a back up. It can speed recovery of your system after a hard drive crash or similar failure where your data is lost. Fully restore your system without installing any of the original software or operating system.
2) If you have only one drive, buy another one. Hard drives are inexpensive today. Another hard drive will allow you to backup another copy of your data.
I'll Give a few more tips next time.
We won't go into the exigencies of advertising your products, services or business here, but there is something along these lines you should always keep in mind. The best kind of advertising your business can receive is that you don't really pay for - publicity.

External Hard Drives: If you need larger data storage space, external hard drives are an excellent choice. Arrays, or stacks, of hard drives are available for corporate uses and are provided by all good hard drive manufacturers. Seagate, Maxtor, ASB, LaCie all make external hard drives of varying capacities and prices. Sometimes we are too busy with our work and tend to forget to backup our data every once in a while. This can lead to some serious consequences. The other problem is that most people never think a hard drive crash will happen to them.

In order for a file to be useful it has to be readable. To do this you need to know the name and path of the file. From this the file system can determine where the file is stored.
In some cases it is not possible to simply read all of the file into memory. File systems also allow you to reposition the read pointer within a file. To perform this operation the system needs to know how far into the file you want the read pointer to jump. An example of where this would be useful is a database system. When a query is made on the database it may be inefficient to read the whole file up to the point where the required data is, instead the application managing the database determines where in the file the required information is and jump to it. This is often known as a file seek.

If your system has recently been upgraded or you added new hard drives, disk drives, a graphics card or anything for that matter, you need to check if your power supply is being overloaded. A good way to check is to use a power supply calculator. Problems can occur due to your power supply being unable provide enough juice.
The first thing to do is check the power supply connectors, make sure everything is plugged into the motherboard and the power cable is plugged into the power supply, many people forget to plug in their computer. Many power supplies also have a power switch on them so check that it it on. Check the fan to see if it is spinning at the correct speed and blow it out if it’s dusty. Determine if the power supply cables are giving out the right amount of voltage, if you computer will let you boot you should be able to check them in the BIOS menu to see if the correct voltages are being given. Normal power supplies give +3.3 volts DC, +5 volts DC, -5 volts DC, +12 volts DC, and -12 volts DC.

In order for a file system to be able to create a file, there must be enough space left on the drive for the file to fit. No other file in the directory can have the same name, and as soon as the file is created, the system will make a record of all its attributes.

A little computer training teaches that all files have a name by which they can be accessed by the user. In most modern file systems the name consists of of three parts, its unique name, a period and an extension. For example the file 'sally.jpg' is uniquely identified by the first word 'sally', the extension jpg indicates that it is a jpeg image file. The file extension allows the operating system to decide what to do with the file when opened. The operating system maintains a list of file extension associations. Should a user try to access 'sally.jpg' then it would most likely be opened in whatever the systems default image viewer is.
Bad motherboard problems are also similar to problems caused by a faulty or dying power supply, so check if the power supply is faulty or swap it out for another to see if your problem is fixed. Try swapping out the motherboard to see if that solves your problem, if that's the case then the motherboard is most likely faulty. this is where computer training come in handy.If you think the motherboard is faulty and it is still in warranty you should be able to send it back to the manufacturer for a new one with no hassle, sometimes they might even pay for the shipping & handling if it is a big problem that is happening with a certain line of motherboards. Make sure that when you open a motherboard you keep all of the packaging and the box, and if there are any stickers that will void the warranty if removed make sure you do NOT remove them, so that way it is easier to send back.

You will need an IBM compatible system, with a hard disk with at least 20 Gigs also the bigger the RAM the better. If you can afford it, 4 gigabytes is recommended. Some basic computer training will explain all this but he hard disk will allow you to store several major programs in your computer and not have to load your word processing system each time you turn on the computer.

If you give your client a disk with his final draft, he can forward that to a publisher who will run THE SAME DISK on his computer to typeset the entire manuscript. Or, the disk can be run by a Desktop printer to produce a hard copy, complete with photographs.
And, that's not all: with an added device - a MODEM costing $100 or DSL, or a Broadband connection to the internet, you can send the contents of that disk over the internet to the publisher in just a few seconds! You can learn all of this with a little computer training.
Needless to say, if you used a non-standard system or program , your options would be severely limited. If you use a (cheaper and) smaller, lesser known word processing program, it won't do some things that "standard" programs do.
For example, the major programs have 100,000 word spell correctors, while some of the smaller ones have 40,000 or so. A search on Google will help you sort this out.
When your prospective client asks what computer you use, he/she will recognize IBM compatible as the current word standard; when you tell them you use Microsoft Word or Word-Perfect, they will know you have the "very latest" and can do their work professionally.
Most computer programs also have version numbers, which indicate how new or old that particular program is. Once you have a word processing program, however, updates are fairly inexpensive. With a standard, professional word processing program, you can not only prepare final documents, you can prepare manuscripts for publication.

Major word processors include many features that would make a typist's head "swim": automatic word separation (hyphenation) at the ends of lines, spelling correctors (correct a word a second), the ability to inset illustrations and print in columns (from "normal" input).
For those who might be "petrified" of the word "computer," let us just say that it should take an ordinary high school graduate no more than one week of computer training to learn to prepare this report on an IBM compatible computer with WordPerfect or Microsoft Word.

Word processors normally earn from $1 to $3 per double spaced standard sized page or $10 to $20 per hour, depending on the location (part of the country, city size), job complexity, typing speed and local demand. If you search on Google, you can find sources for work.
Note that this business was conducted with typewriters a few years ago, but the most expensive typewriters cannot compare with even low priced word processors of today. With a word processor, and some computer training you type the data, check it on the screen, then file (save) it on a disk (forget about cassettes!).
Whenever you want to see (or edit) the text, you simply recall (load) it back onto the screen, review or revise it, and re- save the revised version back on the same disk. Or, press a couple of buttons and print it -- in a choice of print styles, margin settings and spacing.
At any time, a printed version (draft or final) can be obtained without affecting the stored version. If your margins are set at 1" and you suddenly realize they should be 1/2", you pull your hair out if you are typing.. But on a word processor, you simply press a button, re-set the margins ( a second or two) and the entire document can be repositioned in a flash and reprinted with the new settings by pressing another button. This is why computer training is so essential.

Part 4
Should you care if your computer is considered out of date in a year's time? Not really. If you are happy with the computer you bought, and it still does what you want it to do, is that really a problem?
There is always going to be a better, faster, snazzier video recorder, car, cooker, and computer coming down the line. That's the nature of life. So don't let that fear of obsolescence prevent you from buying a computer today.

I have successfully kept an old computer of mine going by doing this, but it is not cheap and in some cases the result is not worth the bother. This is because upgrading a computer properly should be done with regard to the whole system. Rather like you wouldn't put a V12 engine into a Mini without upgrading the brakes (I hope!), so it is unwise to upgrade the processor without putting in more RAM and/or a faster video card.
If you do, you simply move the performance bottleneck in the computer from one place to another, which sort of defeats the object. Of course, upgrading a computer in this balanced way can become expensive, so take care to do the sums first. If the sums say it is more sensible to buy yourself a new computer give your existing one to the kids!

Can You Avoid Obsolescence?
Well yes and no. Yes, because you will not experience obsolescence as long as you continue using the computer and the original software for your tasks. No, because eventually you will probably find that there is something new that is so compelling (e.g. voice activated computing) that you will want to upgrade to take the benefit.
You can certainly delay the process, though, by a little wise buying.
Performance of your older system can certainly be improved by adding more RAM, putting in a faster graphics card and upgrading the processor - and by doing in that order

The classic example is of someone who buys a new computer just to do word processing, and then decides that they really want to play all the snazzy new CD-ROM based games that are coming out. In this case, unless they initially bought wisely with the games element in mind, they are likely to find that their computer is expensive and difficult, if not impossible, to upgrade to cope with the new task. This is why it is essential that you buy a computer with at least one eye on the future.
You will never be able to buy a computer, which will cope with all the new software years down the line. You will almost certainly have to upgrade if you want to take advantage of new software 3 years from now, for instance. But if you still want to do the same job as you bought the computer for three years ago, with the same software, your computer will last and last.

Wait or Buy? - Let's define the problem.
1.) If I buy this computer, how long will it be before it becomes obsolete?
2.) Can I avoid it?
3.) Should I care?
How long will it be before it becomes obsolete?
First things first. What do we mean by obsolete? Computer development is now moving so fast that an individual model of computer will come to the end of its sales life after about 6 months. It certainly doesn't mean that your new computer will stop working after a few months. Nor does it mean that you will have to buy a new one to run the newer software.
In fact what it normally indicates nowadays is that the processor brain will have been superseded by a newer version, and that the overall specification of the computer will have been improved.
In real terms this will have no effect on your machine at all. As long as you want to continue using your computer for its original purpose, it should give years of sterling service. Obsolescence only comes into play where you decide that you wish to change how you use your computer, and the new use requires a higher specification than you currently have.

Make sure that your budget includes the essentials for your job. In most cases it is pointless buying a computer without a printer, so budget it in. Likewise cables, CD-RW and floppy disks.
Don't skimp on the RAM. If it is a choice between more RAM and a faster processor or CD-ROM, choose more RAM. It will benefit you in the long run.
Don't be tempted to buy cheaper software in order to save a bit of money. It's better to save elsewhere - honestly!
Don't be scared to ask about all the possible configuration options available. It may be that there is a combination that better suits your requirements than the obvious one.
Where possible, get everything you need from the one source. Don't be tempted the buy the main system from one place and then the add-ons from another. A computer is best configured and set up all in one place unless you're an expert!
Last but not least, budget in the cost of an extended on-site warranty, for at least three years if possible. This is your insurance policy for the future.

Don't be taken in by claims of the 'value' of a software bundle. How much is a bundle of software that you may never use, worth to you? In some cases the answer is not a lot, and sometimes that's exactly what the software is worth. Sometimes, though, the software included with the machine is all you need to get going and so is worth quite a lot indeed.
Your computer will most likely come with a package that includes a simple word processor, spreadsheet and database. Ask yourself "does the software let me achieve my main purpose for buying the computer?" If so, then it should obviously influence your buying decision. If the software is just a "fun" extra, you may do better to look around for a bundle that gives you more of what you will really use. It's up to you.

There are a number of British companies who have good reputations even though they are not household brands, and there are also a number of Far Eastern and American companies who have established a reputation over the years for providing reliable equipment. Magazine awards, size of company turnover and the like will help to point the way. As will the readers pages of some of the more helpful computer magazines, or national newspapers.
The final point is to cover yourself with your own insurance strategy. Do not buy a computer without obtaining a long on-site guarantee. If your budget won't take it, then change your budget to include it. You may never need it, but that maintenance guarantee levels the playing field between brand names and no-names.

Giant clone makers like eMachines also have their own reputation to maintain, and are able to sell at no-name prices simply because they are making vast quantities of the product. In fact, one of the reasons eMachines are so inexpensive, is because they don't advertise. They wouldn't consider themselves to be a "no-name" brand (even if you haven't heard of them!). I recommend you look into purchasing a eMachine.
If you are going to plump for a product you've never heard of before, it is almost always safer to buy it from a reputable source (such as a high street retailer or department store) than direct from the company itself. This is because the store itself has a reputation that it will be anxious to keep, and selling unreliable equipment is the last thing that they need.
If you buy direct from a very small manufacturer, which subsequently goes out of business, then you are left with no one to turn to if you need repairs or support. The first point, then, is to decide exactly who are no names, and who actually have a good and longstanding reputation even though you may not have heard of them before.

Ah, now this is one of the thorniest questions, which faces the computer purchaser today. Should I buy a well-known brand or a 'no-name' clone, which is cheaper and therefore gives me more for my money? Well this is not so difficult as it seems. It is no longer true to say that you can lose performance from buying a clone.
Most, if not all, clone computers now have specifications that match, or in a lot of cases exceed, that of the brand names. It is also true that some of the low-end computers sold by brand names are in fact manufactured by clone factories around the world.
However, it is also true that some of the top name computers from companies such as Compaq and IBM have a clearly superior build quality to the average computer.
They also often contain some unique technology such as Compaq's 'easy access' buttons that provide direct access to the computer's CD and fax capabilities without the need to run software.
What you also gain is the knowledge that the brand manufacturer has a reputation to keep up, and so will try and avoid adding in anything that could cause reliability or performance problems in general use.
Modem Speed:
With a little Computer Training, you will learn that a modem will only run as fast as the modem it is talking to at the other end of the telephone. So if your Internet Service Provider only offers service at 33.6kbps, you won't get any benefit from a 56kbps modem. Also, if you only intend to use your modem for faxing, virtually any modem will do, as most fax machines only run at 9.6kbps. There are several other options you will have for speed, such as DSL, T3, or Broadband. These are all much faster than the fastest modem speed of 56kbps. I recommend Broadband
It is obviously up to you to weigh up the pros and cons of each specification against your budgetary constraints and make your choice of modems. Because there are so many different combinations it is almost impossible to list them all, so the best advice I can give in this Computer Training is to set out your minimum requirements and then treat every extra feature that comes within your budget as a bonus, rather than a must to have.

How much is a little extra speed worth to you? Unless you're going to work online full time on the computer, running your business and saving the world, it is highly unlikely that the slightly slower speed of a 2.4GHz processor versus a 2.9GHz is going to make that much difference to your life.
Memory:
If you have to make compromises to reach your budget, go for more memory before a faster processor. Make sure you can get some Computer Training. Extra RAM will help to avoid the drop in performance from thrashing and show up more clearly in actual use than the small performance increase from a faster processor.
CD-ROM Speed:
The speed of the CD-ROM only becomes important if you're going to be using multimedia a lot to work online and running software directly from the CD-ROM. But even here you can decide just how fast you need that CD-ROM drive to be. Slower equals cheaper (i.e. a 16x drive or 'sixteen times' drive is slower and cheaper than a 24x or 'twenty-four times' drive or 48x 'forty-eight times' drive).
Applications Software
The key ingredient of any computer system is the application software. This is the software which converts our computer into the tool we want it to be, e.g. a typewriter.
Most mainstream application software packages for tasks such as word-processing are nowadays very similar, and quite often are included in the cost of the machine. We will get into some examples of different applications at a later time.
Once created, software is stored by the programmer on floppy disks or on a CD-ROM disk. Software on a floppy normally needs to be installed onto the hard disk before it is run. With software on CD-ROM, we can either install it the same way, run the software directly from the CD, or a combination of both. Cd-Rom is mostly used today. Very little software, if any, is sold on floppy disks.
With most multimedia CD-ROM software, critical parts of the program are copied to the hard disk, while the larger multimedia material is loaded into the computer memory from the CD only as and when needed to conserve hard disk space.
Operating System
This is the software that makes the computer light up and get ready to accept our instructions. Every computer must have an operating system, and almost all use Microsoft's Windows XP and now Vista.
It is usually already installed on the computer's hard disk when you buy it. When you turn on the computer it starts up (or boots) by reading the operating system from the hard disk.
TV Cards
Add a TV card into your computer and watch TV while you work! You can also store TV pictures and Teletext pages onto your hard disc to view or print later.
Digital Cameras
These great devices allow you to take photographs digitally, store them in the camera without any film and then load them to your computer. You can then save the pictures onto your hard disk, print them and include them in your own documents. Many people feel think that this amazing technology may eventually completely replace the standard film camera.
Computer Software
Turn the computer on without any software loaded and the screen will remain black. So what is software? In its most basic definition, software is the set of instructions, which tell the computer hardware what to do. Without software, no computer on earth can operate.
Software is made up of lots of instructions (often millions of them) which are created by a computer programmer, and which we then buy to make our computer do certain tasks.
Data Back Up
As you fill up your hard disk you will accumulate an increasingly valuable store of information. Computers do occasionally go wrong, and if it is your hard disk that fails, your repairman will usually install a brand new one, with only the software that came when you bought your computer! Taking a back-up copy of your hard disk is therefore an extremely prudent thing to do.
If your hard disk mainly stores software loaded from CD, then backing up those few critical files that you may have created yourself onto floppy disk may be a feasible way to back up. If, however, you have stored a lot of your own work on the computer, a data back-up device is essential!
These are available as either big removable disks of about 100MB capacity like the 'Zip drive', as write-once CD drives, or as tape drives with capacities up to many Gigabytes.
Add-ons
Also known as peripherals, these are the things that we can add on to the computer to accomplish additional tasks. These include:
Scanners
With a scanner we can copy photographs or other printed material and load it onto the computer so that we can manipulate it. Standard resolutions are 300dpi (dots per inch) and above. The two main types are hand scanners for odd jobs, and page scanners for more serious tasks. Page scanners are either fed like a fax machine, or at the top end, bed' like a photocopier.
Joysticks and Game Pads
These add-ons let us control games on our computer. The joystick acts instead of the keyboard to make it easier to fly the plane, or drive the car or whatever other fun tasks we want to do.
Multifunction Printers
Multifunction printers can do more than just print; they can scan images, and some can send/receive faxes and produce document copies. Multifunction printers that have all of these capabilities are sometimes called All in One Printers. Most Multifunction printers are based on ink jet printing technology.
It is important to consider the scanning resolution of each machine, as it can vary between fax quality and high-resolution quality (the same as you'd achieve with a separate scanner).
Multifunction Printers are ideal for home offices that are short on space.
B. Laser & LED
Laser printers are the main workhorse printer in the office world at the moment and print in a similar manner to photocopiers, using a toner cartridge. (LED printers produce virtually identical results with a slightly different technology). These types of printer print a whole page at a time and speeds are always measured in ppm (pages per minute). They are fast (i.e. from 4 to 10 pages per minute for top end home printers, up to 40ppm for expensive business ones). They are also high quality with resolutions up to 1440dpi and with powerful graphics and font capabilities built in. However, although they are coming down in price, they remain more expensive than ink-jets, especially the color models that are still expensive.
Printers
These are the boxes that output the results of the work that we have done on the computer. They come in a variety of flavors: dot matrix, ink-jet and laser.
A. Ink-jet
Ink-jet printers are the most popular type of printer for the home computer. They are quiet and produce good quality black and white (and often color) text and graphics onto plain paper. They are available in a wide variety of print qualities and speeds. Quality is measured as dpi (dots per inch) [the more the better] with 300dpi being the minimum resolution up to 1440dpi or higher. Type styles are virtually unlimited and depend only on the software and fonts you are using on your computer.
Some of the latest color models have technology that can print images of the same quality as photographs with up to 16.7 million colors. Speeds are measured either in cps (characters per second) or in ppm (pages per minute). Although traditionally slower than laser printers, some of the top end ink-jets are now faster than low-end lasers.
Speakers
Speakers play the sound generated by the sound card. Output power is measured in Watts per channel (W), just like for hi-fi. The quality of speakers can vary dramatically between low end and high-end computers. At one extreme, the speakers can be of a similar quality to a cheap transistor radio, at the other end they can be of real hi-fi quality.
Speakers with a separately powered subwoofer can give great 'big speaker' performance. Although screens with built-in speakers reduce clutter and wires, their quality is usually middle of the road at best. It's up to you whether you want to compromise performance for neatness, so make your choice accordingly.
Monitor
Monitors for home computers are available in 17", 19" or 21" sizes with price increasing with size. Most entry-level computers come with 17" screens, whilst higher end models will use the larger sizes. Computer screens are all much higher resolution than a TV. A bigger screen will display a bigger picture, and combined with the right graphics card can also display more information on the screen at a time. Flat screen monitors are also very popular, yet expensive. You can search on Google for the Monitor you want.
The technical specifications relating to screens cover things like refresh rates (e.g. 75MHz, the bigger the better) and dot pitch (i.e. the size of dots, the smaller the better). Rather than get involved in working out different specifications, take a hard look at a demonstration screen. Is it flickering, or are the letters on screen fuzzy compared to a more expensive model? If so, it is likely to cause you problems later on if you have to spend a long time in front of it.

Modem:
Most, but not all, home computers now come with a built-in modem. This attaches to your telephone socket and lets you connect to the Internet or other computers using your ordinary home or office telephone line. Modems come in a range of obscure types, with speeds measured in kbps. 56kbps is the standard as dial-up connections will soon be obsolete as more people switch to using Broadband Internet.
One of the advantages of buying a modem is that almost all of them come with software, which will let you send and receive fax messages over the phone line. In other words they turn your computer into a fax machine.
Having Computer Training has allowed people to earn a living with their own computers with their own home business. Some people are employed to work with government, multi-national firms, etc. Research on Google has shown that by the year 2025, about 85% of the world population will acquire a computer.
Keyboard
Computer keyboards follow a standard format, with the basic "QWERTY" typewriter layout conveniently centered with 'function keys' above it, arrow keys to the right and then usually a calculator type pad on the far right.
Try out various keyboards as they often have very different feels-from a hard 'click' to a soft 'squidge'. A few computers even come with one of the new ergonomic keyboards as standard, which are designed to provide a safer and more comfortable position for those who do extensive amounts of typing.
Mouse
There are a few variations in the shape of the mouse, so you may want to check the one that comes as standard to see how comfortable it is to use.

5. CD-ROM & DVD Drives:
All computers come with either a CD-ROM Drive (with entry level - mid range computers) or a DVD Drive (with newer, higher specified computers). A CD-ROM drive reads CD-ROM discs that look the same as home audio CDs but store computer programs and data. The capacity of one disk is about 650MB.
The drives are measured in terms of their speed of rotation (e.g. 32x = all computer with a CD - ROM drive (with the entry-level - in the remote computer) or DVD drive (with the update, the higher the designated computer). CD-ROM drive to read the CD-ROM discs look the same, the home audio CD, but the storage of computer programs and data capacity, is on a 650 Mb.
The driver perspective to measure their speed (such as 32 x = 32 times the normal speed of rotation of the audio CD). Once again, faster and better, faster rotation, faster data access, faster, it can provide to you.
DVD - ROM discs is the biggest thing, playing in several computer is the successor to CD - ROM discs. 1 DVD - ROM disk can accommodate about seven times more data than the standard CD (the upcoming 4.5 GB). This means that software companies can now add more video and animation to their educational and entertainment products. So you can play regular CDs and CD-ROMs in the DVD - ROM drive (though not the other way round).
In parallel to its use in computers, DVD - ROM discs have started as a new medium for watching high-quality feature films at home. Consumer DVD players, simply plug in to your TV for the very high quality, movie player. Computer and DVD - ROM drive, but also need to MPEG - 2 the ability to play DVD film titles. 32 times the speed of normal audio CD rotation). Again, the faster the better, the faster the rotation, the faster the data can be accessed, the faster it can be delivered to you.

3. Hard Disk Drive (HDD or storage):
This is the filing cabinet where the computer stores stuff after it's finished with it, so that you can use it later. It is also where the programs are stored when you install them. Measured again in MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes).
One giga is about one thousand mega (so 4.3GB is 4300 mega). Again bigger is better. It is amazing how quickly you can fill up a hard disk, particularly if you install a lot of software or graphic images. The minimum size you should consider is 20GB. A top end system can include disks up to 120GB (or more)!
Looking around us today, without no reasonable doubts we agreed that the computer has really made huge changes in the way we live our lives. Many people have started their own home based business. Life is simpler and more flexible with the computer, quick decisions are made where necessary and above all,the whole world has been made a global village. All these were possible by our curious minds with the help of Computer Training.
Memory (RAM)
RAM is the 'kitchen table' where the computer does all its work. A temporary storage area for the programs it uses, so more is better. Measured in MB or megabytes, 256MB is the minimum memory you should consider.
Many home computers now come with 2 Gigabytes as standard. The more RAM you have, the faster things will tend to run on the modern computer, although for this Computer Training lesson that is a bit of a simplification. I recommend at least 2 GIGs of RAM.
The amount of RAM is important if you are going to be doing lots of graphic work, because big drawings or illustrations need a big 'kitchen table' to work on. When a program starts running, a part of it is loaded from the hard disk into memory.
As additional parts are used (or other programs are started) they are also loaded into memory. A computer with a smaller amount of memory might run a single particular program just fine.
However, when we are running more than one thing at a time, without enough RAM, the computer may run a lot slower than we want, unbearably so in some cases.

Do I understand the basics?
A computer system is not, in general, made up of just one item. It consists of a number of distinct parts, the computer hardware, the printer, add-ons and software.
Strictly speaking, a printer is also a piece of hardware, but for the purposes of this Comptuer Training guide we will treat them separately.
Hardware
The computer hardware is made up of the 'hard' pieces, which work together as a whole. This includes the actual computer system unit, the keyboard and mouse that are used to interact with the computer, the screen and the speakers, which play the sound. Nowadays some computers have the screen and system unit all in one, while others have speakers built into the monitor but the principal components remain the same.
System Unit
This is the main computer box in which the computer's important bits reside. This is either a 'desktop' unit which is a horizontal box usually placed under the screen, or a 'tower' system which is vertically oriented and either sits next to the screen on the desk or placed on the floor.
There are eight important items inside a computer's system unit:
1. Processor (CPU):
This is the brain of the computer. Its speed is measured in terms of GHz or gig-hertz. The higher the speed, the faster the computer can complete its work. E.g. 2.4GHz is the equivalent of telling us the size of the car engine. A bigger number is faster.
We need to know whether our car is capable of cruising smoothly on the autobahn at 120mph or is better suited to a little trip to the local shops. Pentium® is the name of the most popular make of processor from Intel. A 2.0GHz processor is today considered to be entry level, 3.5GHz plus is considered to top end. Don't be intimidated by the technology and you may find that it opens up new areas of creativity that you never thought possible in music, art and writing.
The purpose of these pages is to give you enough Computer Training to make a sensible decision as to which computer to buy, without having to know the technology inside out.
Here are four questions to you should answer before buying a computer:
1: Do I understand enough about the basics of a computer to make a sensible decision?
2: What do I want to do with it?
3: How much money do I have to spend?
4: When is the right time to buy?
Do I understand Basic Computer Training?
There are some basic things that it is important to know in order to make an educated choice. Luckily there are not many and most relate to speed or size.
In general a faster speed means that your computer will be able to do tasks quicker; a larger size means that your computer will be able to perform more tasks or store more information.
Examples are speed of processor, speed of CD-ROM, speed of graphics, size of RAM, size of hard disk storage etc.
What do I want to do with it?
It is important to think about what you want to use the computer for. This is because different tasks need different specifications, and the better we define what the job we want to do, the more likely we are to choose the right Computer Training and model for our needs.
Be careful though. Many is the time that a computer bought for one task has ended up doing another, completely different one, as well. Buy as big a computer you can afford. Especially RAM. Try and have at least 2 GIGs.
You may just want to do a bit of word-processing with it, but will your son or daughter want to use the latest multimedia encyclopedia on it some time soon?
What is my budget?
This factor, of course, will control whatever decision you have to make. What I mean here is that your budget should be realistically balanced with your expectations of what the computer will do. Later on we'll see how to juggle the choice of components around to get the best value for money within a given budget.
Also remember that your budget should include things that are not included in the computer's basic price. Many people forget that a computer they bought to be used as a word-processor is all but useless without a printer, which in most cases is priced separately.
With computer technology and Computer Training changing so rapidly, it may be tempting to wait a little longer for the next 'big' development. The truth is that computers will never stop developing, so it doesn't make sense to procrastinate. Later on we'll see why.
Finally…
Keep in mind the criteria you normally use when making any major purchase. Once you've found something that fits your needs and budget, check that you feel comfortable with the build quality, with the manufacturer and with all the other 'touchy feely' aspects of the system. And make sure to receive Computer Training so you will not get stuck.
You will be be spending quite a lot of time together with your computer in the future.
